Espresso is a coffee-making method of Italian origin, in which a small amount of nearly boiling water is forced under pressure through a layer of finely-ground coffee beans. This is referred to as pressurized percolation brewing.
AeroPress® uses total immersion of coffee in water and rapid filtering. Coffee and water are mixed in the chamber and are steeped for 1-5 minutes before the mixture is plunged through a paper filter. This is referred to as immersion brewing.
JOEPRESSO™ combines the ease of using the AeroPress and traditional espresso technologies to force hot water through a finely-ground layer of coffee beans. The result is a full bodied espresso, perfectly balanced and complete with crema.
A drip coffee has up to 2% TDS, espresso has 8% to 12% TDS. Here is 10% Brix or 8.5 TDS made with JOEPRESSO™, 18% extraction yield.
This test was made using a classic 1:2 ratio espresso, 14g of medium-dark roast coffee freshly ground, 29g of finished product, to make see instructions on the right or watch the video.
Just fill the filter basket full of coffee grinds, tamp it with the filter lid and leve the lid on top, attach it to your AeroPress®, fill with 40 to 45 ml/g of boiling water for an espresso, 30 ml/g for a ristretto, or 60-70 ml/g for a cafe lungo. Press out one drop and wait for 10 seconds, then continue to extract. Total extraction time should be 25 to 35 seconds. For a large black coffee, just fill with ample amount of water and press right away, no need to pre-infuse, as shown above.
Passthrough extraction using stainless steel filters delivers ideal espresso characteristics, limiting bitterness and other undesired flavors while still producing full body taste.
Crema is the creamy layer of micro-foam on top of a perfect espresso. It is created as a byproduct of high pressure extraction or by the use of pressurized filters.
With the low environmental impact and low cost of the AeroPress®, JOEPRESSO™ further reduces the impact by eliminating the need for paper filters and making the most of your coffee beans.
